Chapter Thirty-Four

{ Grady }

Grady was reading his book of spells when he sensed Beth enter the Grove. He eased the book shut, unsure what kind of reception to expect after cutting Beth off. Knowing her, she would either be spitting fire or giving him the cold shoulder.

“Stubborn woman,” he murmured, pushing away from the table. Annoyed at the disturbance, his heart betrayed him by fluttering in joy at the thought of seeing his beloved.

Taking a deep breath, Grady tamed the curly mop of hair with his fingers and went to meet them.

The sight of Beth and Tom cresting the hill caused his stomach to somersault. With a sigh, he dropped his defenses and braced for impact.

Beth’s fists were clenched at her sides. Her fury rolled over him. As overwhelming as it was, her pain and feeling betrayed at being disconnected twisted the knife already stabbing his heart.

Grady couldn’t blame her after shutting her out and leaving without explanation. Among the jumbled mess of her emotions, one single beacon stood out like a star — Beth was thankful he was unharmed.

He struggled not to grin as Beth stopped short of where he stood. Tom continued forward to grip him in a bear hug. The clap on the back was slightly harsher than expected. Grady’s intense gaze was trained on Beth before pulling away from his best friend’s vice grip.

“What are you two doing here?” Grady demanded, ignoring Beth’s glare.

Tom scoffed. “We were worried after Beth said you had a heart attack. You can’t just leave us without any explanation.” He added in a whisper, “And I can’t stand to see Beth suffer like that again.”

“I’m sorry,” Grady said quietly, glancing at Beth before addressing them both, “I wouldn’t have come back here if it weren’t important. But, now that you’re here, we’re all in danger.”

“What kind of danger are we in now?” Beth came to Tom’s side and crossed her arms. “Myrtle said we have twenty years before the big bad pops.”

Grady furrowed his brows. “That still may be the case, but Jeff’s soul...”

Right on cue, Jeff popped up next to Grady with a “Boop.” All three of them were startled, but Grady smirked. He raised an eyebrow as if to say, “Told you so.”

Seeing the new arrivals, Ghost Jeff greeted, “Hey, Beth and Tom.” They stared at the spectre, completely speechless.

“Come with me. I’ll explain everything.” Grady held out his arm, pointing toward the twin cabins. When Beth scowled, he added gently, “Please.”

Tom conversed excitedly with Jeff’s ghost, taking off toward the cabins. Grady waited for Beth. Finally, she gave him a curt nod, uncrossed her arms, and walked past him. Grady fell in at her side, hoping their fingers would brush, but Beth kept a careful distance. Instead of speaking, she watched Tom talk animatedly with ghost Jeff. The silence between them was deafening.

Grady couldn’t stand it anymore. “Beth, I really am sorry. I shouldn’t have left you like that. I didn’t want to come here, but I needed you to be safe.
